I agree - road trips are fun. And, avoiding summer time in the desert
is a distinct incentive.
Another alternative might be the train. Could be fun, and possibly not
much more than flying. I've heard raves about train trips, and enjoyed
the few I've taken. Leisurely, time to see the countryside, and very
smooth. And safe.
