Thank you for the replies. The fact that it won't work behind a pi-hole
(please see the other email in this thread) is an indication that the
device is calling home perhaps regularly to stay functional. Depending
 on the intentions of the developer/company, this may be a totally
benign vs severely malignant behavior (like the one you are dreading)
in my humble opinion. I would be very interested to know your
experience with the alternate firmware, and will request some info about
that in a couple of weeks (gotta set a reminder to self).
