[Cialug] Displays

I can chime in on 4k for the desktop. I got a 28" 4k samsung....one of the
low-end models on Black Friday a couple years ago. I got it home and
plugged it in and promptly couldn't use all 4k. My GPU at the time choked
and said NOPE...can't do it. Got a cheap-ish upgrade from Craigslist while
waiting for the 10xx nVidia GPUs to come out. I think my 4k killed it...I
ended up with a 1070 before Black Friday hit last year (yay...got to pay
full price...). Mostly, what I can say is 4k is nearly too-high of a
resolution for PC at 28". Going full 4k makes for TINY icons and text and
forget trying to use it with a 1080p 2nd monitor. So I scaled to
150%...essentially text, icons, etc running like 2k now, but images and
videos still utilize 4k. Not all applications work properly with windows
scaling. (Arduino IDE is a good example...still runs with super tiny text)
Really, I've run the display at 2k and 4k and couldn't tell the
difference. I went to 4k because at the time there wasn't a big cost
difference. If that's still the case...go 4k....just because, otherwise go
2k IMHO...no need to scale and still have a great picture.
Also, I just want to point out that 2k/4k are misnomers and I'm well
aware. Should be QHD/UHD.
For what it's worth...1080 can still be great if your eyes can't tell much
difference. I recently got an HP Elite X2 1012 G1 (yeah...that's a
mouthful) tablet with a 1080p screen. Looks great as long as I'm not out
in the sun or getting a ton of glare/reflection. And really...for a mobile
device, it cuts down on the processing power needed to get all dem pixels
to da screen :). All-in, the 1080p display was the ONE detractor on that
tablet and I don't regret getting it. USB-C/Thunderbolt3 - yes, Full USB3
port - yes, kickstand - yes, keyboard and pen included - yes, cheaper than
surface (even used) - yes. I'm hoping the USBC/TB3 port has or will
support eGPU...if my desktop ever dies I'm thinking of going dockable
mobile only (GASP!). Sadly, with two kids...I rarely get face-to-screen
time with my powerhouse in the basement and spend more time on mobile
devices and TV/RasPi than anything. You know....now that I finally have
that nice 4k monitor and 1070gpu... :'(
