[Cialug] How normal is it to ask for w2s and pay stubs as part of the interview process?

I've been flat out told that they want the w2s to make sure that the hiring
salary isn't that much more than what I have made in the past. Which creeps
me out. You should want to know about the quality of my work, verify if I
can meet and exceed your needs and what salary range I am looking for.
