[Cialug] VMware install on Ubuntu 10.04 issue

I wouldn't worry about anything vmware server related as far as skills :)
workstation is the virtualbox counterpart and KVM/xen would be the esxi
equivalent.
If I was getting brushed up today I'd focus on KVM and openstack. The
hypervisor and management of hypervisor has almost reached commodity point
and specialized vmware skills for that area are pretty commonplace.
If you were looking for something opensource and pretty awesome, I'd dig
into vmware's cloudfoundry. Just my 10c.

I am trying to increase my knowledge of packages that seem to keep popping
up on job postings. I have been job searching since the end of June and
the whole effort has been relatively fruitless. I have had 3 interview in
the period.
In all the how to's found with suggestions of how to overcome the problem I
saw none of them have resolved the issue for me. One seemed to be oriented
toward someone with a 64 bit system which I don't have.
Probably wasting my time if this package is not being supported anymore
anyway!

Tom, what is your intent here? That might help a lot to decide what type of
virtualization you should be running.
If you're just trying out an OS, or want to run something occasionally,
then VirtualBox or VMWare Player may be a good choice.
If you want to host virtual machines that run all the time, I'd recommend
running one of the servers like VMWare ESX.

I would recommend using something other than VMWare Server if possible. I
have it installed on an Ubuntu machine at work, and have had a lot of
problems with it. The latest problem is in a VM. I installed Ubuntu 11.10
on a VM (so I could check it out before I installed it). I'm having
problems with the mouse in the VM. The mouse is so bad, I have a very
difficult time launching anything. The problem before this one, when I
upgraded the root OS to the latest Ubuntu LTS, I had to find a patch to get
VMWare to work at all. And every time there's a kernel update, I have to
re-configure VMWare so it will run. It has been a bigger pain than I
thought it would be.

Do a search on this line:

and the ubuntu version you're working with. I had this problem once too.
Can't remember the exact fix, but I think there's a patch you have to
install.
VMWare server's getting out of date and doesn't seem to have support
anymore. I'm still looking for a good alternative with a web console and
auto-startup features.
