If you are running the stock firmware the phone should let you know
that there is an update available.  From what I saw by googling "htc
hero froyo" there's not boing to be an official update to 2.2 for the
Hero.

If you're feeling brave you could try switching to the CyanogenMod
firmware.  It looks like the HTC Hero is supported.
