Both the HTC Hero CDMA and GSM models will run CyanogenMod 6.1.0

So that means that it will run Android 2.2.1

I thought I would ask here after seeing your comments about Android security since I am not 100% certain from what I can find on the net. Do any of you know if the HTC Hero is limited to 2.1 or below? I am currently on 1.5, but I have not yet explored how to do what you are suggesting here.

I care more about running a securable and stable Linux system than taking full advantage of everything. For me, a rooted phone with DroidWall, AndGuard, LookOut and AdFree is sufficient. I'd like a solid boot-time encryption solution too, but haven't found one yet.
