[Cialug] Rooting an Evo and custom firmware

In my case, I get the ability to run a wifi hotspot at no charge beyond the $10/mo Sprint charges me for 4G access in a market that doesn't have it.

It also allows me to run Cyanogen which, with one exception, I am finding more intuitive than the interface that came with it.

Also, and somewhat theoretical at this time, I get the direct access to the wifi drivers that I would need to do wireless pentesting while my laptop is doing the physical LAN. At this time though, Metasploit is not yet fully ported to Android.

I'm sure there's other stuff. Maybe TJ can chime in here.

I did. However, I did not find out about Unrevoked 3 until I was already a fair way through the doc linked from Cyanogen. It could probably have been done a lot quicker than the way I did it.

Ummm...Why didnt you use Unrevolked<http://unrevoked.com/>? It took me about a minute to root my HTC Incredible. Well, I did it the old way before unrevolked but have since used them to re-root it and to turn s-off with unrevolked forever.

What do you get by rooting your phone?
