Agreed, a manual switch can be had for a lower cost, but you would 
still need an electrician to install it if you're going to pull a 
permit. Half of the $4K was the electrician's time & supplies, .. a 
manual switch (equipment cost ~$300-$500) would still be in the $1K 
to $2K range with installation. That's double the cost of a decent 
generator, much harder to justify for a 'random' outage.
