That's one thing I've noticed when messing with other people's themes.
More often than not, the code is really ugly.
There is also a firebug module for drupal 6.x in the modules section. I
may download that and try it out.
Thanks!

Here are some tops I suggest for doing great things w/ drupal themes:
1. Start w/ a base theme. On my main site I use ninesixty. It is a
very bland theme that only sets the base styles. Zen is another popular
choice.
2. Build your design in a graphical app (I use inkscape but Gimp or
PhotoShop are also common), then move to html then make it a theme.
This gives you far cleaner code and you just add the features you like.
If you use a base theme you may want to take a screenshot of it and use
it as the background / onionskin for your design.
3. Professional drupal development by Jon vandyk is a great book. Also
check out the developer extension for drupal which has a theme developer
mode. You turn it on and it gives your site a firebug like overlay that
helps you figure out how to set up your PHP/theme files to get some
really awesome customizations. I have a 35% off coupon if you like, but
the price on Amazon is already discounted so just get it there.

First, thanks all for the firebug tip. That thing works GREAT!
A special thanks to Kenneth for the direct tips.
At this point it's mostly fixed up. At least everything is
usable.
Only issue is still with the story/blog post preview. Getting
some white
fields still. It's ugly but functional. The main body of the
preview
has the correct background color now.
I've been keeping notes on what I changed and why in case there
are
unintended consequences.

Thanks again for all the suggestions!
