Just remember - when you use NTFS or FAT32 on external drives you
don't have to worry about permissions. It shows up on your desktop and
you have read/write access like you'd expect. However, if you plug in
a drive with an ext2/3 formatted fs then it operates under exactly the
same rules as, for example, /home being mounted on a seperate file
system.
So if the file system is owned by root then you may be able to read it
but you probably won't be able to write to it. Even if the icon shows
up on your desktop.
