[Cialug] sip

Hi Neal,

Probably key to having a reasonable experience is figuring out what codecs
are supported by voxalot. something like gsm might be good. Or g.729 if
everything in the call path will support it.

Unfortunately SIP has a lot of issues with NAT. If the network you are on
is one of those "homegrown" networks run by "a couple of guys", then it
might be NATted like crazy. You may want to try skype (I can't believe I
just said that), or find a phone service and soft phone that supports IAX
protocol. There are several soft phones and one service I am familiar with
is nuphone. (I'm assuming you want to get to the PSTN in the US. Maybe I
am wrong)

Anyway, we can probably get something figured out if you supply more details
of the network.

-Nate

Subject: [Cialug] sip

ok. i'm messing with voxalot and trying to figure out what all the
advantages to sip are.

so far i understand that it is a large "phone network" i'm trying to figure
out how i can use it to make quality phone calls from here in iraq to back
home.

i do have broadband. and can make regular sip calls just fine.

any ideas or experience stories are good. thanks

p.s. a PBX is on the agenda for when i get home in august.
