I fingered it out. For some reason it had 2 instances of ntpd running.
But I killed both processes and then restarted and now all is okay.
But here is what it had in /var/log/messages
Mar 11 18:31:00 mail ntpd[91350]: sendto(132.163.4.102): Bad file descriptor
Mar 11 18:31:06 mail ntpd[91350]: sendto(129.186.140.200): Bad file
descriptor
Mar 11 18:31:17 mail ntpd[91350]: sendto(192.43.244.18): Bad file descriptor
Mar 11 18:31:44 mail ntpd[91005]: sendto(132.163.4.101): Bad file descriptor
Mar 11 18:31:55 mail ntpd[91005]: sendto(129.186.140.200): Bad file
descriptor
Mar 11 18:31:56 mail ntpd[91005]: sendto(192.43.244.18): Bad file descriptor
