Don't worry about TWAIN. It's the standard interface for scanners on
both the Mac and the Dark Side. I would be worried if a scanner DIDN'T
support TWAIN.
If you have no program that supports TWAIN, you can always download
the Mac OS X port of The Gimp, a free Photoshop clone.

Image Capture also appears to support TWAIN.
