My success with Google has been:
-my domain name contains an essential search term
-I used meta tags
-my web site's content mentions essential search terms all over and on many pages
-be linked to by other sites
-I think I also submitted my site for registration several years ago
As a result, when people search for 'paxil' they find my site on the first page, and when they search for 'paxil withdrawal' my site (paxilprogress.org) is result #2.
I've hosted with GoDaddy for several years and have had the best hosting experience ever. paxilprogress has a dedicated virtual server for $30 a month and it handles millions of hits and page serves each month. We've had about 3 hours downtime in the past year because GoDaddy got a DoS attack once. Besides that, it's extremely fast and reliable service. I'm also hosting a personal site through GoDaddy for $12 a month and it's really fast. I hate slow servers, and GoDaddy just zips along like a cheetah.
If we get a PHP/MySQL capable web server, I can install the same software Wikipedia uses (mediawiki) and members can all contribute their own articles, presentations, meeting notes, calendar events etc. It only takes a few minutes to setup, and the rest is just preferences and account administration. I did this for my employer just recently.
