"How stripped down can I make it??? Safely???"
That's the real question. When you did the install of OSX on the
drive, did you go into options and deselect bunches of stuff? That
would be a safe way to get a good trimmed down system. The iApps and
the stuff in your applications and utilities folders - those are safe
to trash. I wouldn't go deleting files from the Library or System
folders unless you were quite sure what you were doing. There is a
wee bit of fat in there, but when drives cost less than $0.50 per gig
you are going to save yourself less than a few dollars worth of space
and spend more than a few dollars worth of time to do it.
There is a little bit of software that looks OK - Applimiser. (http://
www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15044) This little app will remove lots
of the other language localizations from the system to save drive
space. It's $12. You could save most of the same space by just
deselecting those other languages when you do the install.
Trimming the system down like this does bring to mind for me the
question of why you are doing this. I read that this will be a media
drive - pretty much just for storing movies, tunes, and pics. You
want the thing to be bootable so that you can run maintenance
routines on your other drives while booting from this one? What is
your thinking on this?
