[DM-MUG] long-term data storage

Putting this out to paint the picture further for other readers.

One thing I hadn't considered with a RAID 1, is (from forums.macnn.com):

"RAID is mainly useful in keeping the box running when an HD goes bad. RAID mirroring is NOT a backup solution. If you delete a file, mirroring doesn't help you, the file is simply gone."

I've never used a backup for restoring a file I had deleted accidentally, because I don't empty the trash regularly. So RAID 1 looks very convenient.

Anyone know if setting up a RAID 1 is destructive for what's on one of the volumes about to be RAIDed? If not, my plan is to boot with the Tiger install CD, and try to setup a RAID between the internal boot volume and the second internal volume. I'll make a full backup onto an external drive first of course.
