[Cialug] postfix or exim on Debian?

Qmail is maintained. The core is just stable and hasn't needed and changes since 1998. Most of the new work is in the realm of patches and add-ons, and is handled here: http://www.qmailtoaster.com/

I also, personally, find it easier to maintain that Postfix, but then I might just be weird that way. ;)

That said, if you're coming from a Sendmail/Postfix sort of background, you'd find Qmail to be deeply counter intuitive and annoying. If, however, you come from a background where you're used to lots of daemons interacting with one another, each following least privilege, you'd be greatly annoyed at the monolithic design in the Sendmail/Postfix world.

Of course, if you come from the business background, you'd say to just outsource the damn thing and wash your hands of SMTP forever. (Which is increasingly my preferred solution. (SMTP sucks.))

The merits of exim are that it is the default. Beyond that, you'll have
to ask someone else what makes it valuable as i don't know. On regular
(aka, non e-mail server) systems i just go with exim and use "dpkg-
reconfigure exim4-config" to make changes. My e-mail server, however,
runs Postfix. The MTAs i'm most familiar with are Qmail and Postfix, but
Postfix is easier to configure. And given that Qmail's latest release
was in 1998, it seems safe to say that it is no longer maintained. I got
a good 8 or 9 years out of Qmail though. It was good in its day.
