[Cialug] Ubuntu 14 upstart

For the Ubuntu fans, .. trying to pull data off a borked droplet (Ubuntu
14). I can boot into the recovery console and chroot over to the root
filesystem, .. so f I could run the MySQL server I could dump the data I
need, but trying to start mysql throws an error:

initctl: Unable to connect to Upstart

Is there a way to start mysqld independently? If not, is it possible to
start  "Upstart"? Just need to get the daemon running to do a mysqldump.
