For now, I went with paid versions of RHEL 8. Considered Fedora, but
it's enough different that it breaks the "develop on what you run on" rule.
I've been experimenting with Ubuntu LTS, not because it was "free", but
because I've been doing a lot of "uncommon" stuff lately and I was able to
find howto's for Ubuntu easier than I was for RHEL 8.
The Ubuntu howto's don't always translate to RHEL 8 and there are package
version differences. Oftentimes newer packages are available for Ubuntu
before RHEL8. Ubuntu's desktop is also less problematic than RHEL 8's
default wayland server.
