[Cialug] Restoring a server

I need to do a 'smart' restore on a machine, and in the past I have relied
on Midnight Commander to do a directory comparison and a file-by-file
decision.

Unfortunately, the last time I tried MC, it was impossible to achieve an
ssh/sftp connection for one directory any more.

What do folks use nowdays?
