Probably plugged in directly, .. some other suggestion:

 * A simple ping script would allow taking action (and recording to a
   separate log file) - suggest ifdn/ifup the USB interface as a first
   test.

 * Swap the PS with a new 2A unit anyway. You can get them for a few bucks
   from China, or there are a number of US sources.

 * Check the temp of the case and be sure you have decent ventilation
   around the unit - some cases might need a small fan for 24/7 operation.
