*IF* it was mounted as tmpfs (which was the question), then all changes
would be lost by design.
Many pi-based devices shove things to tmpfs to minimize writes to SD
storage. Some even mount root as tmpfs.
However, your / mounted as ext4 indeed indicates corruption.
