[Cialug] Cloud Providers

Disclaimer: I've never used any of my VPSs for commercial endevours!

I have had a Linode VPS for probably going on 5-6 years now, and I can't recommend them enough. The only "drawback" to Linode is that they expect you to set up your own server configuration, and Windows isn't an option (if that's what you need to make your bosses happy).

They offer snapshots and backups, and are now offering beta access an "images" feature that would allow you to set up/configure a base VPS, then capture an image that you can then deploy to Linodes in the future. They also offer an API so you can automate deployment of Linodes or changes to any domains you have hosted on Linode's nameservers.

I can also recommend DigitalOcean for many of the same reasons, thoigh they are focused more towards development, while Linode is focused moree towards production.

Hope this helps,

Subject: [Cialug] Cloud Providers

Need a new server for a mid-level e-commerce, .. my initial thought was to
go to a bare metal provider (thanks for the good recommendations from
folks here!).

After working with Google Computer for a while, however, there are some
capabilities there that would not be available on a bare metal box:

 * Snapshot capability (i.e. snapshot a volume and attach to another
   instance for troubleshooting or development);

 * Spool up a dev machine when needed, leave dark when not needed to save
   budget;

 * Additional resource a click away (e.g. 2 cores -> 4 cores, more disk
   space, more memory), and ability to release resources when not needed.

Google Compute, of course, also has some frustrating features - any
recommendations for a better provider, vis-a-vie functionality or cost?

	Thanks!
