[Cialug] Pendrive system

Been trying to build a thumb drive that can be installed in a workstation
to do some low-level dd copying, and Mint was recommended.

Tried it and it seems nice enough, so I built an 8GB thumb drive with
base "Mint32 no codec".

Unfortunately, performance is SO slow as to be unusable; would anyone have
used a distro that would have decent performance off a thumb drive while
providing a basic GUI?
