I manually created the devices using the major/minor numbers:
sh-3.2# mknod /dev/sdd b 8 48
sh-3.2# mknod /dev/sdd1 b 8 49
Now fdisk -l works:
sh-3.2# /sbin/fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sda: 300.0 GB, 300000000000 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 36472 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 1 13 104391 83 Linux
/dev/sda2 14 36472 292856917+ 8e Linux LVM
Disk /dev/sdd: 2000.3 GB, 2000398929920 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 243201 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdd1 * 13 243202 1953410048 7 HPFS/NTFS
Works now! Was able to relabel the drive. Still don't know why udev
didn't create the device entries in the first place. Thanks Tom for the
/proc/partitions as I was trying to figure out how to track down the
major/minor numbers needed for mknod.
