Yes, Disk2VHD works well and can be used on a live system. Then you can use another tool to convert the disk to a VMware-style disk if needed.
dd can work fine.
You might also be interested in Redo Backup. It can make an image of your partition or filesystem and move it to a new disk as well. It is a specialized linux distro with a nice GUI.

There do appear to be a few more options than the VMWare converter, ..
Disk2VHD looks most promising (as it is a MS$ tool!), .. can anyone confirm that it does, indeed operate as specified?
