I like using virtualization. VirtualBox works pretty well most of the time.
I like to compare VMWare and Parallels and see what each of the three is
missing.
You may not get a full emulation, especially when using the more ambitious
UIs, but a lower-end laptop would probably show very similar limitations.
You will get a pretty good taste of each distro. And, if you want, you can
switch to full-screen mode and won't even see the host OS unless you want
to.
