[Cialug] good linux distro for web dev?

I think what Scott was getting at was that if you are trying to have a look at how the backend is going to function when testing your code, you should put the code on a virtual machine that has the same OS and installed software that the production server has. You can always do the development on the Mint Linux VM, then start up a small VM with the same OS/packages that the dev machine has to test out how the code actually functions.

Of course, if the dev machine has a half terabyte of RAM and 4 6-core Xeons, you aren't going to have some of the errors on the dev machine that you might run into on the test VM (like memory or CPU limits). Of course, if your code gobbles up all the memory on your VM or slows it to a crawl, then it might actually help you find issues that you wouldn't otherwise discover on the monster server hardware. :)

scott - that sounds like a lot of work, haha. plus having a virtual machine
makes it easier for me to cognitively separate different things (this
machine is a school and work machine first, fun machine second.)
