let me make this clear:
- i know a lot about vi
- but i _really_ don't know jack about vi
- i still ask other people that same question often

(and i have the same deal with ms excel)

give me a good programmer's text editor, a good spreadsheet, a good
relational database, and a big native clipboard and it seems there is
_nothing_ that can't be done with a big pile of data
