I've heard that doing data recovery with the drive attached via USB is 
not recommended. Apparently you cannot talk directly to the hard drive 
unless you have control of the ATA adapter, which does not happen in USB 
drives.

I can't remember if I've posted this before but this is a great overview 
of data recovery from Scott Moulton. He has given several presentations 
on data recovery and forensics at Defcon and Blackhat.
