Numerous Ubuntu heavy hitters hang out on http://askubuntu.com/

I'd just check that out to see if others have your problem and if not, ask
there. I've talked to dozens of people who have had a flawless upgrade
experience so your issue is definitely outside of the norm.

I know that one of the things mostly likely to cause problems is using ccsm
(compiz config tool). I've made a conscious effort not to use it in order
to break the habit so I don't even have it installed. But iirc, there is a
way to back up your settings and then reset to defaults. You may want to
just give it a try.

Another thing to try is to create a dummy user and login as that user. If
that fixes things then a config issue in your user profile is likely the
culprit.

I've personally upgraded two desktop machines without problem so don't
subscribe to the philosophy that upgrading is doomed to cause problems. I
do feel that clean upgrades are more reliable (regardless of the OS) but I
know it can be done.
