Although I can't rule out a hardware issue, I also run Windows XP on this same hardware and it still runs fine. I'll try to backup and reinstall as you suggested and see what happens.
Is that the best approach any time there is a problem with booting a linux system?

I wouldn't rule out a hardware issue. The best thing to do is back up
everything you can (System Rescue CD is good for this), then wipe and
re-install from scratch. If it still crashes, try wiping and
re-installing with an older version or alternative distro. If it still
crashes, then the hardware is likely bad and should be recycled.
