My preferred method of upgrading a system is to back up my user
folders (/home), /etc, and any other directories I want to preserve,
then wipe and perform a fresh installation. There are still some
hassles after using this method, but they are predictable (don't
restore the .gnome folder, for example) and easy to resolve.
