Have you actually created and installed Mint in a VM? It sounds like you
might be missing that step?

> Create the VM with an appropriate sized root partition (e.g. 50GB);
(You can always create a data partitionl later.)
> Attach the Mint ISO as a CDROM/DVD to the VM;
> Set the boot order to DVD/CD first;
> Start the VM and run the installation procedure;
> When completed, adjust the boot order, .. you may wish to leave the DVD
attached so you can grab packages from there.
