Thank your for the feedback!  I did manage to finally get past the error however and started the first VM setup.  
 
I'm not real clear on setting up the repositories as you suggest below.  When I tried to add some packages from the command line I got an error
about not having a candidate.  Somehow I got past that.  I need to do this a number of times to make it sink in!
 
At least I am making some progress in using various functions of linux besides just installing it!

hmm.  I always add the repository to my sources.list file 

If you're using synaptic, select settings, repositories.  In the
software repositories window, select the other packages tab, select the
add button.  In the field, add the corresponding repo info from the
virtualbox page...

you'll need to add the key also, instructions for that are on the page.
