Seriously heck out Wubi, it installs Ubuntu from within Windows. It's safe,
it doesn't mess with partitions or the master boot record (it simply adds an
item to Windows' own boot manager). It won't give you the absolute best i/o
performance but for desktop applications you're unlikely to notice.
