The latest version of virtualbox will let your VM use the host usb ports but it requires
addtional software and its kinda a pain to setup. I've got this working in Meerkat with a win2k vm talking to a basic stamp through a usb to serial converter.

Unfortunately that doesn't work very well if you need access to
hardware like a webcam.
