Of all the things on the disk, the easiest to get to is the boot sector.
Even if the file allocation table is destroyed you can still get that.

Does the disk sound dead (making abnormal mechanical sounds)? If not, then
maybe a deep analysis tool like spinrite can recover bits and pieces (or
everything).
