`write' works if you open up a graphical terminal emulator as well.
But I'd suggest going with XMPP and
a CLI client. I've never tried it but there is at least one out there:
http://www.openfusion.net/net/clix
If XMPP isn't your thing you could go with IRC and use irssi (which
many people prefer over GUI clients anyway).
