1. Ditto what others have said about cleaning it out.
If you're also thinking of replacing the fan, here's something I do
before I go hunting for a matching one; a couple of drops of '3-in1'
or sewing machine oil in where the bearings spin on the shaft will
sometimes do wonders. Note 2-3 drops is often the maximum they'll
hold!
Downsides- a.Sometimes the fans are mounted upside-down and it's
nearly impossible to keep the oil in. b. Half the time, it only works
for a few weeks.

2. What do you mean by "square" flatscreen monitor?
LCD, CRT, one that is designed for easy color calibration?
