I gave everyone write permission to wp-content and it still simply
asks for FTP login info.

Then I tried Theron's FS_METHOD direct, with wp-content writable by
everyone, and it was able to download the package, but failed to
unpack the package:

"Could not create directory.  (my home)/wp-content/upgrade/(my package).tmp"

yet:

drwxr-xr-x 2 apache   apache   4096 Feb 20 20:21 upgrade
