[Cialug] Network setup for linux server

I managed to aquire an older server and have installed Ubuntu 11 on it.  It boots fine and I figured out how to set a manual IP and associated mask and gateway but I still can't ping anything by name.  Obviously I have skipped over something int the network setup.  Can anyone help me out?
 
Remember, I am relatively new to using linux so doing all this command line setup is new to me.
