...I'm surprised, and then not surprised by this, but. apparently Walgreens
sells a [few] Android-flavored tablets. Perhaps you won't have to worry
about eBay scams. Obviously, getting this wouldn't have you leading the
field in terms of technology, but it's the cheapest I've seen from a well
known retailer.

Specs on Walgreens.com are pretty vague, but the manufacturer did a decent
job: http://www.maylonggroup.com/M-150_MID.htm
I wonder if/when the Walgreens around here are going to actually carry them
in-store? (I also wonder when they're going to start selling cars.?)

This is easily solved by mounting a 42" LCD TV to your bedroom wall and
getting an HDMI cable for your laptop.
The green text on a black screen from the terminal window is soothing.....
like a nightlight...

More seriously, I think it matters a lot as to what you want with a tablet.
I want a device next to my bed so that when I get the midnight emergency
call, I can analyze the problem without having to get out from under the
nice warm covers. For a simple portable web browser and email client, I
think a Linux tablet will suit me just fine.
