As many of you have heard, Matt was in a car accident a few weeks ago. After Don did the initial groundwork to locate the hospital and room, I spent some time on the phone today visiting with his father. What follows is just some basic information, as I do not know how much Matt himself would like us to know. If you have a need for more, please contact me and I will communicate with you off list.
What Happened:
It is unknown exactly what happened, but it is looking very likely that Matt experienced a diabetic low while driving. His car drifted to the right and hit some signs before it wound up crossing into the other lane and hitting another vehicle. Matt was air-lifted to the hospital where he was found to have a faint heart beat. After a lot of work by a lot of very skilled medical professionals, he is now somewhat stable. He has been in the ICU for the last two weeks.
Current Condition:
Matt is currently heavily sedated and on a respirator. He has had numerous surgeries and is going in today for surgery on his back. He has many broken bones and it is currently unknown whether he has experienced any neurological damage. However, he is more stable today than he has been for the last two weeks. At this time, it is believed that he doesn't have any major paralysis and both sides of his body seem to be functional.
What To Do:
At this time, nothing. Matt's father has requested that we not visit yet. I will be contacting him over the weekend to find out how the back surgery went. Then we will know more. There have been numerous discussions about things like raising money, sending cards or flowers, getting a replacement notebook, etc. These are all good ideas. However, at this time, there is still too much uncertainty to know what the best course of action will be or what Matt will need. I will post an update to the group when I know more... likely this weekend.
Of course, if you have religious beliefs that lend towards prayer and/or good thoughts, I am certain that those would be welcome.
