[Cialug] Burned out power supply

I can't agree more with the UPS recommendation. I built a
fairly good computer for my mom a couple of years ago, and
added a nice APC UPS to the mix. It paid off over the
past couple of months, with the ice storms and power
outages in their neck of the woods. The local computer
shop is now backlogged with systems requiring repair, but
my mom's system (cross fingers) is still doing well, and
auto shutdown nicely when it needed to.
And, of course, it's not just power failures. Quick 1
second outages (I call them "cable switches"), spikes,
brownouts, etc occur often around the Des Moines area.
These can truly punish systems. Dunno if it's MidAmerican
wide, or Des Moines specific, but systems of mine in other
regions don't have near as many as around here.
