You're tying one hand behind your back with DSL. It's a decent choice if you need something tiny, but most distros can be installed in full GUI glory in about 2 GB, or in a non-GUI mode in about 500 MB. That's bigger than 50 MB, but it's not a ton of space by today's USB stick standards, and they're almost all easier to use than DSL.

Plus you can boot almost any distro on a LiveCD/LiveDVD and play with it until you find one you like. Other than slow optical drive access times and the loss of your settings when you reboot, most LiveDVD setups give you a fully functional desktop with no installation at all.
