That kernel is much too old (June 2005) to have the Intel drivers built-in. I'm not sure if there are even Intel WiFi drivers available for the 2.4 kernel. But if there are you'll find them here:

If you're planning to run anything like a desktop system, or want to use udev, or want access to modern drivers, you really should consider a 2.6 kernel. If DSL doesn't have a 2.6 branch I would strongly recommend another distribution. It's been a long time since there was any reason to prefer 2.4 except in very specific situations, and there are a whole host of reasons (including better WiFi drivers) that you'd like a 2.6 kernel.

As for the Airoent, it's hard to say what might happens since it wasn't connected when you grabbed your logs.
But the Aironet drivers have been available since the early 2.4 kernel, so you should be able to build a 2.4.31 that works with that card, and it's possible that it's already installed and just not auto-detecting (one of the things udev fixes).
What does a:
sudo modprobe airo
sudo modprobe airo_cs
do for you?
If you get something like:
FATAL: Module airo not found
then your installation does not have drivers for the Aironet adapter, and it will not work unless you add them/rebuild the kernel.
If you get no errors with the modprobe check to see if you get a new interface.
If there's no no interface check for additional kernel messages (in /var/log/kern or /var/log/messages) that might provide additional details.
And a dmesg/lsmod with the Aironet connected would be useful if you don't get any fixes/information from the suggestions above.
