This is the way I've always seen it recommended. EXT2 and EXT3 are
100% the same except for the journal. I suspect you risk breaking the
journal if you don't turn it off before re-sizing. I'm also guessing
that the journal would just re-build if you forgot to turn it off.

Goes without saying (but I'll say it anyway), make sure you have a
full backup of that filesystem prior to re-sizing.
