[Cialug] debian 40r8 network problems

I got deb etch base install running on the old P75 and networking worked
during the install but doesn't work after booting up for the first time.
I did a ifconfig -a and it comes back with device not found.
would this be a problem in networking or something with pcmcia stuff since
it's not seeing the network cards?
